Hotel
Hotel Levantes is a small family hotel in an unbeatable location, probably the best two-star hotel on the island of Alonissos. Between 7:30 am and 10:00 am, a full breakfast is served as self-service on the hotel terrace, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the port of Patitiri. Hotel Levantes has a small swimming pool and is located 150 meters from the nearest beach and all points of interest such as restaurants, cafes, bars, supermarkets, shops, and the bus stop (which goes to the old village Chora), but the most remarkable thing is undoubtedly the family treatment, a hotel to feel comfortable and the warm hospitality of its owner.
Island
Alonissos or Alónnisos (Greek: Αλόννησος) is an island in the Aegean Sea. After Skiathos and Skopelos, it is the third member of the Northern Sporades. It is located 3 km (2 nautical miles) east of the island of Skopelos. Alónissos is also the name of a village on the island, as well as the municipality that encompasses the island and the village.
The village of Alónissos is located in the southern part of the island. It is locally known as "Jora" or "Hora" (Χώρα). The main port of the island is located in the southeast and is called Patitiri. There are ferry and catamaran services from Patitiri to Volos, Agios Konstantinos, and Thessaloniki on the mainland, as well as the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros. The bay at the southern end of the island is also called Alónissos.
The municipality of Alonissos includes the nearby islands of Adelfi, Gioura, Kyra Panagia (Pelagos), Peristera, Piperi, Psathoura, and Skantzoura.
History
In ancient times, both the island and a city located in the southeastern part were known as Icos (Greek: Ἴκος). The remains of walls from the 4th century BC are preserved in the city, which was part of the Delian League as it appears in the tribute records to Athens between 451/0 and 429/8 BC. Later, it became part of the Second Athenian League, founded in 377 BC. The periplous of Pseudo-Scylax mentions it as a dípolis (two-city), but there are no testimonies of the existence of another ancient city on the island.
Alonissos Marine Park
The Alonissos Marine Park (Greek: Εθνικό Θαλάσσιο Πάρκο Αλοννήσου Βορείων Σποράδων, ΕΘΠΑΒΣ) was established by Presidential Decree on May 16, 1992. It was the first of its kind in Greece and is currently the largest protected marine area in Europe (approximately 2,260 square kilometers). In addition to the marine area, the park includes the island of Alonissos, six smaller islands (Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Psathoura, Piperi, and Skantzoura), as well as 22 uninhabited islets and rocky outcrops. It is located in the region of the Northern Sporades Islands, in the northern Aegean Sea. Administratively, the Sporades Islands belong to the prefecture of Magnesia. Limestone dominates the surfaces of the islands. Its main features are the steep rocky slopes that extend to the sea and the caves, which are an important part of the Mediterranean monk seal habitat. Different types of soil are found, while freshwater sources are scarce.
