Island
Alonissos or Alonnisos (Greek: Αλόννησος) is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. After Skiathos and Skopelos, it is the third member of the northern Sporades. It is 3 km. of the island of Skopelos. Alonissos is also the name of a village on the island, as well as the Municipality
The village of Alonissos is located on the southern part of the island. It is locally known as Chora and signposted as the Old Village. The main port of the island is located in the southeast and is called Patitiri
The municipality of Alonissos included the nearby islands of Adelfoi,Gioura,Kyra Panagia, Peristera,Piperi,Psathoura and Skantzoura
History
In the middle ages and until the 19th century, the island was known as Liadromia, it was renamed in 1838, as it was mistakenly according to the later search-identified with Alonissos of antiquity. In reality, the present island of Alonissos was known as Ikos to the ancient Greeks
National Marine Park of Alonissos
The National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades (in Greek: Εθνικό Θαλάσσιο Πάρκο Αλοννήσου Βορείων Σποράδων, ΕΘΠΑΒΣ) was founded by presidential decree on may 16, 1992. It was the first of its kind in Greece, and is currently the largest marine protected area in Europe (Aproximately 2-260 km.2) besides the sea area, the park includes the island of Alonissos, six smaller islands as well as 20 uninhabited islets and rocky outcrops. It is located in the region of the Northern Sporades Island. The area is an important habitat for many species of fish (about 300), birds (up to 80 species), reptiles and also mammals.
